Artist’s Bio/Statement

DSC_7221About the Artist

Originally from Sri Lanka (Ceylon), Surane Gunasekara moved to US when he was nineteen years old. Introduced to drawing at a very early age while sitting on his father’s drafting desk, Art became a life long passion.

He holds a degree in Architecture from Wentworth Institute of Technology and a Masters degree from the Architectural Association in London.

Gunasekara is inspired by the Japanese zen practice of painting an ‘Ensõ’. The circle is painted with a single stroke of the brush. These collages are Gunasekara’s interpretation of the ‘Ensõ’. To him, it is a spiritual practice. A meditation of sorts, These collages are done with an intention of being in the present moment, however imperfectly. This exhibition focuses on imperfection. In a world that strives for perfection, this series explores and celebrates the art and beauty of imperfection.

Although traditionally, the Ensõ is drawn in black ink, through color, Gunasekara investigates the internal landscape of his emotions as well as draws inspiration from the vibrant and intense hues of nature as well as the subtle shades of the northern California landscapes.

The artist hopes to inspire you to find your own stillness amidst the chaos of modern life and invites you to enjoy this work.
